Sportcomplex De Vliet \u2013 Connecting City and Landscape<\/strong><\/p>\n

Situated on the edge of Leiden, Sportcomplex De Vliet forms the new centrepiece of the wider Sportpark De Vliet. The site lies within a transitional zone between the urban fabric and the open polder landscape. Alongside the design of the sports building itself, a masterplan was developed for the revitalisation of the entire park. Previously fragmented and lacking cohesion, the park is now unified through a new layer of running tracks and outdoor sport courts, creating an interconnected network that integrates the complex seamlessly into its setting.<\/p>\n

Architecture and Materiality<\/strong><\/p>\n

The building accommodates a wide range of facilities, with an ice rink and swimming pool as its principal components. By stacking and interlocking the various volumes, the architects have achieved a compact, efficient footprint. The oval form of the ice rink and the rectilinear mass of the pool define the architectural composition, their sculptural shapes accentuated by deep vertical fins that modulate light and break down the scale of the pure white forms.<\/p>\n

Both main volumes rest upon a continuous plinth of solid green concrete housing changing rooms, storage, and technical spaces. Between these, areas of glazing and light-toned timber introduce transparency and warmth, giving the complex an open, welcoming presence.<\/p>\n

The choice of Petrarch reconstituted stone rainscreen facade panels in a harmonious green palette helps to blend the boundary between nature and modernity and works in beautiful contrast to the industrial metal facade cladding of the ice rink.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Interior and Identity<\/strong><\/p>\n

Internally, the palette is calm and tactile, with exposed concrete, pale timber, and white surfaces forming a neutral backdrop. A refined use of club colours adds a distinctive yet understated identity. The central entrance and caf\u00e9 act as the social heart of the building, offering dramatic views over both the ice rink and swimming pool. Coral red accents trace through the circulation route and furnishings, balanced by blue tones from local sports associations to create a lively, energetic atmosphere.<\/p>\n

Sustainability and Biodiversity<\/strong><\/p>\n

The innovative pairing of an ice rink and swimming pool establishes a symbiotic energy model: waste heat from the ice floor is used to warm the pool water. Photovoltaic panels, high levels of insulation, and energy-efficient systems together bring the building close to energy neutrality. Strong emphasis is also placed on biodiversity, with ecological landscaping and visual connections to the green corridor along the River Vliet.<\/p>\n

A Connected Landscape<\/strong><\/p>\n

More than a sports facility, Sportcomplex De Vliet is conceived as a connective landscape \u2013 a place where architecture, ecology, and recreation converge. The project demonstrates how intelligent design can strengthen the bond between city and nature, setting a new benchmark for sustainable sports architecture in the Netherlands.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>
